We have had these ponds now for 20 years - the deeper pond for koi and the more shallow pond for goldfish of which some of them are many years old.
Their predators are raccoons as well as herons. The latter have been hunting in our pond quite successfully the last few weeks. After trying everything from nets to providing cover for the goldfish we finally have hit on something quite successful - a very large mirror which seems to have startled them back into flight. Our problem: the fish do not want to come out from hiding and refuse to eat. We have removed the cover (they still have lilies) but are huddling underneath the waterfall.
Do you have any suggestions?
We are grateful for any help.

HI, I have a 15 gallon tank with 2 beautiful goldfishes. One of them is a common and the other is a commet. But recently my cousin wanted me to take care of his 3 commet fishes and I put them in the tank with my fishes. I realised that they had bunch of white spot on them and I remembered that when fish wants to make babies this happens. But surely this was not the case because one of them lost half of its tail. So i removed them from the tank and quarantied those 3 in a small fish bowl no bigger then 1-2 gallon. I aslo added some medication referred by the petstore. My question is that even before I took the fishes from my cousin I noticed that the fishes had this white spots for lets say emm 2-3 months. SO are the fishes going to survive if I keep them in medication?

The way I treat ich on my goldfishes may not be conventional but it works. I quarantine new or infected goldfish in a 1 gallon bowl (because it's a smaller environment to control, easier to do frequent water changes and only a temporary set-up. When they are better, I put them back in my 55gallon tank).

I use a drop of "Had-A-Snail" for every water change. I change the water in the morning, and at night for 7 days. The parasites fall off within 12-24 hours. I heard of this from a guy who owned a fish store and so glad I tried it. It also works with Flukes! Hope this helps.

I sounds like you might have a bully fish on your hands. Best to move them in seperate tanks for a few days and see if there behavior has changed. Also a its a good idea to look carefull if any of them suffured an injury that might be infected, usually more by fungus than bacteria (you will see white velvetly or fuzzy like patches or spots on fins or tail or around mouth or in a wound). It is a slim chance but possible that they have a parisite but need more info to fugure ot that one.
It sounds like that Adam's fish's tank either has a very low ph and/or high ammonia levels in that case change the water a couple times and look into a better filter or some ammonia neturlizer and ammonia test kit and a ph raser and ph test kit (a tiny pinch can of baking soda can rase ph some but not recommended to be used more than twice in a water change). But theres a good chance its Gill Disease: Fish struggles to breath, stays at the bottom, loss in appitite folds up all other fins and swims with one on one side; all due to a bacterial infection in the gills cause by excessive ammonia, poor conditions... a very tough one to diagnose at first because there are little to no physical signs. but there are still may treatments in pet stores and also here is some web sites diagnose and find meds to treat such disease u don't nesicarily need to buy them from them you might be able to find what u need in a local pet store... www.fishyfarmacy.com/symptoms.html

Hi,
I have a common goldfish only an inch or maybe even smaller, i only got her the other day at petco. Today i noticed she had three white spots that looked very much like these discriptions. One on her tail (it fell off about an hour ago) one on her dorsil fin and one on one of her flippers. Shes not lathargic but shes had a very stressful week because i had to return the tank twice to buy a new one, so shes been in a few large vases i got out of a box in the garage. I've added the fish medicine called MELAFIX and im wondering if that will do any good? on the directions it says I'm supposed to change it after three days, but that doesn't sound like it'll help alot. What am i supposed to do? what can i do? and will this always be there or will it eventually go away?

ray: without oxigen, the fish will die. fish has to have oxigen. derek: no, its not a new tank, if you get a fish with ich, treat it with ich-away by wardley and then 24 hours after treatment, change 50% of the water and then, treat it again 3 days later. then, a week from that, change 100% of the water. glad to help.

windgirl: you made a big mistake: you dont want to take a fish away from counter-fish. I know they were picking and poking him, but, that, over time, will stop. I have a comet, a large doldfish, a small calico comet, a medium black moore, and a green algae eater in a three gallion tank and they are doing fine. Also, I got a large black moore in a one gallion tank and he has ich. the only treatment i use and will use is called wardley ich-away. old school and the best. also, all fish species have a albino. i hope this helps anyone whom had a question. for ich, i fully recommend wardley ich-away. i trust it. i have kept fish all my life.

Hi, I've had a goldfish for 6 years and it belonged to another owner for a number of years beforehand so I am led to believe he is quite old. A few months ago I noticed that one of his fine was a lot smaller than the other (about the size of a pinky finger nail) whereas the the larger is about the size of half a pinky finger. But when cleaning him out the other day I noticed that bits of his tail had disappeared, looking as if they had been ripped off; tail and fin rot is the closest match I can find. He used to live with another goldfish who died a few years ago so he is now single who admittedly I do not clean out as often as I should but still fairly frequently. Is this tail and fin rot? I'm 14 so I have no idea how to check for the pH of water or what would help him.

Please please help I love this fish so much and I hate to think that I might be losing him.

I have the same problem as Adam above. i had one fish who just seemed to lose interest in everything he stayed at the bottom of the tank in his log and eventually died. I have just introduced two new fish and one of them is just sitting in the plants wiggling slightly but not swimming. he looks very sluggish what could be the problem?
Thanks

I bought 2 caloco orandas about three weeks ago, both of them seemed perfectly healthy and after about a week - week and a half they died. They had this fuzzy white stuff all over them and i am pretty sure it was ick. After they died I cleaned out my tank and washed everything thing with warm water and refilled my tank and used some water conditoner to help neutralize the water. I am just wondering if there is anything else i can do to prvent the ick from comming back and killing any future fish i might get?

They had this fuzzy white stuff all over them and i am pretty sure it was ick. After they died I cleaned out my tank and washed everything thing with warm water and refilled my tank and used some water conditoner to help neutralize the water. I am just wondering if there is anything else i can do to prvent the ick from comming back and killing any future fish i might get?

Thanks very MUCH for this insight into sexing of goldfish! I have a comet; a fantail and a black moor, and they are exhibiting signs of spawning...as it is Spring and the 'male' appears to be chasing the 'females' :) I had heard about the underside ridge before, and was not sure what to think, but now that I have read this, I feel a bit more satisfied. Thanks again!

Hello. I have a small pleco, small ryukin goldfish, and small black moor in a 10 gal.
The water is cloudy but I bought some AccuClear and it's clearing up. About a week ago, my fish got ich (but the black moor didn't seem to have gotten it) and I stopped treatment yesterday because the symptoms disappeared about 3 days ago (using Rid Ich)
Now, the black moor has a white cloudiness over his bubbly eyes and some whiteness on his tail and fins (especially on the edges)...now the edges are starting to fray and I think the ryukin is getting the same thing (her fins are fraying)
What is this and how do I treat it? Can this be ich again?
